EAST LANSING, MI — The holiday season was over two months ago, yet there are many neighborhoods with residents who still have their holiday lights up. Aura Osborn, who lives in East Lansing’s Glencairn neighborhood, says it brings her cheer.
“I noticed a while ago that people were leaving their lights up longer. I’m just thankful, so many are doing this, especially because during the holiday season. I work late and when I come home and see the lights it just brings me joy!”
Aura isn’t the only one to notice the lights. Meegan Holland put a message on the neighborhood Facebook page thanking everyone for keeping their lights on.
“My philosophy is these are not Christmas lights; they are winter lights. One night I walked around the Glencairn neighborhood in East Lansing and I saw all these lights still on. It was close to midnight and after Christmas. I thought, this gives me such a feeling of ‘higgy’, which is a Nordic term for coziness during the wintertime, and I just loved it.”
It seems wherever you go in East Lansing’s Glencairn neighborhood, the houses are illuminated with cheer. Resident Peter Dewan says it’s something small that can make you feel good.
“You know we found that there were more neighbors that had lights on this year. I don’t know if that is a direct result of Covid. People are home more and thinking we can brighten our lives up a little by leaving Christmas lights up. It’s comforting and peaceful.”
Resident Tom McLravy isn’t planning on taking down his lights until spring.
“This time of year, it gets dark, cold and lonely, especially with the pandemic going on. I like to think about it as giving people hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel. It gives people something bright and joyful to look at during the night. I’ve had a lot of neighbors come up and say how much they appreciate it.”
