The Sparrow community and others are mourning the loss of a pet therapy dog this week

The golden retriever named Sam gave more than 1,000 hours of service to patients, caregivers, and visitors who came through the hospital since 2011.

FOx 47 News got to meet Sam during a story in 2013--- when several therapy dogs were brought in to MSU to help students relieve some stress during finals week.

Sam also provided support to the Lansing fire department after firefighter Dennis Rodeman was killed.

FOX 47 News has been told that Sam collapsed Monday while playing with his owner Kathleen Rademacher and died unexpectedly.

He was seven-years-old.
