JACKSON, Mich. — A generous Jackson County community helped gather more than 46,000 diapers in United Way of Jackson County’s first-ever diaper drive.
The United Way Diaper Drive, presented by Henry Ford Allegiance Health, brought together local businesses, individuals and other organizations to collect donated diapers during March 11-22. Text-to-give and other financial gifts supporting the drive raised $5,879, all of which went to purchase diapers, bringing the total number of diapers donated to 46,718.
“This was an astonishing show of compassion from across Jackson County,” said Ken Toll, president and CEO of United Way of Jackson County. “We’re grateful to our sponsors and to all those who donated for showing the generous spirit of our community.”
For families in or near poverty, something as simple as diapers for babies are a source of financial stress, Toll said. Some families are forced to leave their baby in a diaper for longer than they should. That puts an infant’s health at risk.
The donated diapers are now being distributed to local families in need through Catholic Charities, Child Care Network, Family Service & Children’s Aid, Jackson Housing Commission, The Salvation Army, and Together We Can Make A Difference House-Diaper Pantry.
Sponsors of the Diaper Drive include United Way of Jackson County, Henry Ford Allegiance Health, CP Federal Credit Union, County National Bank, HOME.fm, and Two Men and a Truck. Also, WILX News 10 partnered with UWJC to raise awareness and encourage support, providing comprehensive coverage throughout the drive.
