Office of Study Abroad gets a new name

Posted

Michigan State University’s Office of Study Abroad has changed its name to the Office for Education Abroad to better reflect the diversity of program options available to MSU students.

The term “education abroad” is commonly used within higher education to reflect the emerging range of international experience available to students, including study abroad, research, service-learning and internships.

The name change, effective April 1, also reflects the growing number of international students coming to MSU for non-degree study experiences through partner exchanges and the American Semester Program.

“To graduate Spartans who are highly valued and career-ready, we must offer a wide range of educational programs that equip them with the knowledge, experience, and cultural awareness they will need to enter our increasingly global society,” said Steven Hanson, associate provost and dean for International Studies and Programs. “The Office for Education Abroad is at the center of those international opportunities for students.”

Although the core functions of the unit will not change, a new name reinforces a longstanding and vibrant message of MSU’s commitment to international education and global student mobility.
