Walk-Off Win For Green Clinches MSU Baseball Green-White World Series

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State baseball’s annual Green-White World Series was clinched by the Green team with a 10-9, 10-inning contest Sunday afternoon at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field on junior infielder Joe Stewart’s two-run walk-off single.

Junior utility player Zach Iverson, sophomore infielder Trevor Hopman and Stewart boosted Green at the plate with. Iverson ended with four hits, with a double and an RBI, and scored three times, while Hopman blasted a three-run home run as one of three hits. Stewart also had three hits, ending with three RBI and a run scored.

Senior infielder Bailey Peterson added two hits, with one RBI and scored a pair of runs.

Iverson also pitched three innings, yielding just one run.

White was led by senior outfielder Bryce Kelley and sophomore outfielder Zaid Walker with three hits apiece. Kelley also drew two walks to go with scoring two runs and had one RBI, while Walker had a pair of doubles with two RBI and a run scored. Sophomore infielder Peter Ahn added two hits and drew two walks, scoring all four times on base, adding one RBI. Senior infielder Justin Antoncic had a three-run triple, while sophomore catcher Scott Combs added a double.

On the mound, White’s highlights including junior Jesse Heikkinen going 4.0 innings, chalking up four strikeouts, and allowing just one run.

White jumped out a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, loading the bases on two walks and an error, before Antoncic cleared the bases with his three-run triple. The lead swelled to 5-0 for White adding two more in the second as Combs doubled, then Ahn drove him in with a triple, before Kelley had a sacrifice fly to drive in Ahn. White plated a run in third, manufacturing a run with a couple walks and an error to open a 6-0 advantage.

Green started its comeback in the fourth, as redshirt-freshman catcher Gabe Sotres had an RBI double, plating freshman outfielder Jack Frank, who reached on an infield single. In the fifth, Stewart had an RBI single to score Peterson and Iverson, cutting the gap to 6-3.

White took a 7-3 lead in the top of the sixth after three-straight singles from Ahn, Kelley and Walker.

Green hung a four spot on the board in the top of the seventh, as Iverson sparked the rally with a double, and junior catcher Adam Proctor drove him in with an RBI single. Stewart later singled and Trevor Hopman belted his three-run home run to complete the comeback and level the score at 7-all.

White regained the lead temporarily in the top of the eighth, as Kelley walked and later scored on a double by Walker for an 8-7 lead. The advantage was short-lived, as Green came right back with a one-out triple by sophomore infielder Ryan King, and Peterson followed with a sac fly to make it 8-8.

Neither team scored in the ninth, sending the game to extra innings. White took a 9-8 lead in the top of the 10th as Ahn started the scoring rally with a walk and then stole second. After advancing to third on a Kelley single, Ahn scored on an errant pickoff throw to first.

Peterson started Green’s game-winning walk-off rally with a one-out walk and Iverson followed with a single. Proctor followed with a walk to load the bases, before Stewart singled to drive in the tying and winning run for Green to win the game and the series.

The series wraps up with Game 3 on Tuesday, October 15 at 3 p.m. (7 innings), to conclude MSU’s fall action.
