LANSING, Mich. — Mel Tucker is close to completing his first recruiting class as Michigan State's head football coach.

“Our general goal in recruiting is to fill our needs while strengthening our team," Tucker said in a press conference Wednesday afternoon. "We are not just collecting players or chasing stars. We are building a team.”

National Signing Day looked different this year, with many schools going digital and many communities limiting gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the excitement remains the same.
Michigan State Football took to social media to welcome their fresh talent into the Spartan family.

East Lansing is welcoming 16 new Spartans from 9 different states. Five of the newest arrivals to the program come from right here in Michigan and one of those, East Lansing High School offensive lineman Ethan Boyd, from right in our own backyard.

In one tweet the team referred to Boyd as the “King of EL."

Alongside Boyd, Michigan State is bringing in a collection of three-star prospects on both sides of the ball. Among them is the three-star quarterback prospect Hampton Fay coming out of All Saints’ Episcopal School in Fort Worth, Texas. Fay, also referred to as ‘Gunslinger,’ could be just what the doctor ordered for an MSU offense that’s been nursing injury and stagnant productivity throughout the season.

This class is committing to MSU on the tail end of a 2-5 season for the program that has been at the mercy of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tucker, who was made head coach of the Spartans, following Mark Dantonio’s sudden retirement, has been riding a wave of "will they or won’t they."

The Green and White will take on Maryland this weekend for their final game of the regular season. That game originally was scheduled to be played on Nov. 20th but was canceled due to COVID concerns on the Maryland campus.

Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m. Catch the game on the Big Ten Network or stream it on FOXSportsGo.com or on the FOX Sports app.
