A ranking of the top school districts in Michigan for 2019 was released by BackgroundChecks.org Wednesday.

The rankings were determined by assessing scholastic and financial metrics, including student-to-teacher ratios, standardized test scores, teacher quality, graduation rate and school funding. Information was gathered from databases at the National Center for Education Statistics and the U.S. Department of Education.

The top five school districts are outside of the metro Detroit area, according to the ranking.

"While there is a lot of progress to be made in Michigan’s public school system, with its standing among other Midwest states dropping in the past couple decades, it’s not all bad: there are plenty of school districts in the Great Lakes State where things are going well," the report said.

Copper County ISD, Eaton RESA, Eastern Upper Peninsula ISD, Clinton County RESA and Gratiot-Isabella RESD made the top five.

Livingston ESA in Howell was ranked sixth and Macomb ISD was ranked 23.
