Attorney Dana Nessel will be Michigan’s next attorney general, beating out current State Rep. Tom Leonard during Tuesday’s election.

Leonard conceded the race Wednesday morning.

“Last night’s results may be personally disappointing, but it is time to move forward and allow Michigan’s next attorney general to begin transitioning into this important role.  Dana Nessel ran a smart campaign and earned the voters’ trust.  I have offered her any help she may need getting acclimated to the department and beginning her term.  I will always have a passion for serving alongside law enforcement and making our state safer and stronger for Michigan families, and I wish Dana the best as she assumes that mantle on our behalf.

Nessel, a prominent attorney in Michigan, will succeed Bill Schuette as AG. She received several high-profile endorsements including from former Vice President Joe Biden, Sens. Gary Peters & Debbie Stabenow and much more.

A University of Michigan and Wayne State grad, Nessel is known for her defense of same-sex marriage. She also said that she will work to shut down Enbridge line 5 on her first day in office.

Leonard will begin as AG in 2019.
