The metro Detroit doctor accused of mutilating the genitals of young girls is expected in court today.
Dr. Jumana Nagarwala remains locked up this morning. Today's appearance in federal court will deal with her bond.
Prosecutors say the emergency room doctor has been performing a surgery known as female circumcision on girls, for the past 12 years.
Court documents say the victims were often 6-8 years old.
This procedure is illegal in the U.S., but is often done in areas of the Middle East, Asia and North Africa as part of a particular religious and cultural community.
The feds were tipped off about the doctor when two girls were brought to metro Detroit by their mothers from Minnesota.
The doctor allegedly performed the surgery in February at a clinic in Livonia.
This is the first case of it's kind in the U.S.
If found guilty the doctor faces up to life in prison.
