Snow day forgiveness bill moves forward in state legislature

LANSING, Mich. — A plan to help Michigan school districts with snow day forgiveness is moving through the state legislature.

The House Education Committee approved a bill Tuesday from state Rep. Ben Frederick, R-Owosso. The bill would forgive snow days from when Michigan was under a state of emergency Jan. 29-31.

However, it's not getting complete support.

The bill does not give hourly school employees the pay they missed during those school days.

State Rep. Darrin Camilleri, D-Brownstown Township, said in a statement that workers like bus drivers, janitors and support staff, should not be punished for events outside their control.

"Just as we shouldn't punish schools for closures due to events outside their control, we shouldn't punish the hourly employees -- our bus drivers, our janitors, our support staff -- who keep our schools running," he wrote.

The bill now goes to the House Ways and Means Committee.
