JACKSON, Mich. — Officials have released a statement that officers in an officer-involved shooting in Jackson have been cleared and the shooting was justified.
29-year-old Joey Ramirez was shot and killed by officers on January 28, 2019.
Police say he had a history of domestic violence and stalking, also that he was a felon and it was illegal for him to be in possession of firearm.
On that day in January, police were called to an apartment in Jackson were Ramirez, an ex-boyfriend of the woman who called, was trying to get into her apartment.
When officers arrived the suspect left, running from the area.
Two officers spotted the man running throughout the complex and one of them started to chase him, but lost sight of him. Later, he was able to confront the suspect again.
Police confirmed the suspect was armed.
Jackson Police Chief Elmer Hitt told FOX 47, "The officers were wearing body cameras, I've had an opportunity to review some of that and the suspect did fire at the officer first, the officer initially did return fire."
Two other officers engaged as well, and they are not sure which officer hit the suspect.
Ramirez died at the scene.
Initial reports said that an officer had been shot.
Since then, police confirmed it was just minor injuries, like scratches during a fall.
Neighbors also talked to FOX 47 about what they heard and saw that morning.
Vonnie McNish said, "My home girl, seen from the window up there, he fell out, she seen him fall back. It wasn't a good thing to be woken up at 3 a.m. in the morning to all those gunshots. It was very sad."
