Schor faces down council in vote to override veto

LANSING, Mich. — It was a big night and a big win for Lansing Mayor Andy Schor on Monday.

A vote by the Lansing City Council to override his first veto failed.

Mayor Schor had vetoed the budget for the next fiscal year.

He took that action after the City Council voted in May to slash $60,000 designated for a neighborhood coordinator position.

The council wanted the money to be re-directed to cover part of the cost for a chief restructuring officer.

Now, both positions will be funded.

"I'm thrilled, we get a chief restructuring officer and we get a neighborhood position so we're getting two positions that the city needs," stated Schor. "we need to continue to increase the capacity in our neighborhoods and we'll have a restructuring officer that can take a look at our departments and help us as we navigate our legacy."

The City Council needed six votes to pass the override of Mayor Schor's veto.

The vote was four to three.

This was Mayor Schor's first veto.
