If you're struggling to pay that heating bill, you might just be in luck, Consumers Energy and United Way will keep you nice and toasty this winter with a program they call CARE. It helps low income households pay their heating bills through the winter.

"With 4 in 10 Michigan households financially unstable,” Ken Toll with United Way said. “A lot of people are struggling to pay their utility bills this winter. We want to help those folks so they can spend the money where they need to."

CARE makes sure nobody gets left out in the cold.

"We still hear stories of folks being found clutching an old TV for warmth because they lost their gas,” Ken said. “This is one way that consumers and united way can help aren't suffering through it this winter."

And with the snow already starting to fall, now might just be a good time to grab an application. They're holding a signup event this Monday. And if you do join, Ken says Consumers will make sure your house is ready for the harsh weather.

"Consumers Energy will come in and check your housing and provide some upgrades to save you money on your utility bill in the future," Ken said.

They want to work with their customers, even if they can't afford their bills.

"They don't want to shut off your power,” Ken said. “So if you are behind, call them or call United Way or simply call 211 the operators there will help you figure out what programs you qualify for because we all want to keep your lights on and keep your house warm this winter."

If you’re interested in applying for the program, the application event will be held at united way in Jackson on Monday, December 12th from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
