A petition is circulating in Okemos -- calling on the school district to expand its safety protocols.
It comes as schools across the nation step up security following the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida.
'Secure our Schools' is an online petition gathering support for buzzer camera systems to be installed at the main entry of each building and doors to be locked during the school day.
"For me as a parent at least it helps me feel more at ease knowing that the school is more secure," said Young Mi Choi, a parent whose daughter attends one of the schools in the district. "Right now it's open and anybody can just walk through one of the main entrance doors and it's not necessarily in the view of the office."
The petition states that the system may not act as a complete deterrent for individuals who want to get inside a school and harm teachers and students, but it may give precious time for first responders to act.
Petitioners are urging Okemos Board of Education members to approve the proposal and implement these safety measures.
"Parents might think otherwise, because you're taking their freedom away, going in and out as you please; whatever. But in the end, its all about the safety for the kids and the teachers. When you're at work the last thing you want to worry about is your kids safety," said Tyler Good, a parent.
The school board will hold a meeting Monday -- where they're expected to vote on the proposal.
