Two Detroit police officers are being credited with helping save a drowning pregnant woman who later gave birth.

Officers Brian Gadwell and Steven Rauser told reporters Tuesday that when they arrived late Monday night at Riverside Park the woman was losing her grip on a branch a man was dangling down to her as she struggled in the Detroit River.

An EMS worker also jumped into the river to help. The J.W. Westcott mail boat later arrived to help pull the woman out.

Police say she was nine months pregnant. Her son was delivered by cesarean section at a hospital. Their conditions were unavailable Tuesday afternoon.

The officers and medic were for treated for hypothermia.

Police Chief James Craig says he will seek lifesaving medals for the officers.
