More than 200 medication bottles have been collected from mobile pill receptacles placed at Lansing area high school football games.
The Ingham County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with the Lansing Police Department, put the receptacles at six games throughout the fall in an effort to fight the opioid epidemic.
Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth says many teenagers who get hooked on opiates and eventually heroin get their start with leftover prescription drugs from home. He says the 200 bottles collected are a 'huge win for the community' in battling the epidemic.
Wriggelsworth says Phase 2 is for his department to partner with large businesses in the community to collect unused and expired pills from employees. Deputies would be at the businesses for a couple of hours on these "green days" to take the pills and ensure proper disposal.
"This plan is in a beginning stages, and more information will be forthcoming," says Wriggelsworth.
