Michigan Tobacco Quitline wants to help you quit smoking

Posted

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is expanding its phone coaching and nicotine therapy program to all Michigan residents until May 31.

They're offering a free two-week supply of nicotine gum, patches, or lozenges for new members who want to quit smoking or quit chewing tobacco. The Quitline phone number is 800-QUIT-NOW (800-784-8669). It's open 24 hours, 7 days a week.

If you're interested you have to be over 18 and meet their health requirements. You'll get a coach who will help you set a quit date, pick a nicotine replacement option, and make a personalized quit plan.

"Callers using NRT along with coaching, such as through a telephone-based service like 800-QUIT-NOW, can increase their chances of becoming smoke-free by five times the rate of someone quitting cold turkey," said Dr. Eden Wells, MDHHS chief medical executive.

The Michigan Tobacco Quitline provides free telephone coaching for people who are uninsured, pregnant, or enrolled in Medicaid and Medicare, veterans, cancer patients, and American Indians.

The Quitline has English, Arabic, and Spanish-speaking counselors, and interpretive services for other languages. You can >click here for more information.
