Police officers from across the state came to Lansing today to investigate a murder, but it's not real.

The mock exercise is part of homicide school underway at the Lansing police department's special operations center.

Detectives are learning how to preserve and collect evidence at different kinds of crime scenes, and how to deal with questions from reporters.

The Michigan State Police training division and the MSU School of Criminal Justice team up to provide the training.
"Detectives are chosen from the ranks of officers that are very good investigators - typically what you'll have in this school are people with some time in, seniority in their jobs and they've been anointed detective within their respective agency," said Lt. Chuck Christensen from Michigan State Police Fifth District Headquarters.

The training is offered every year.

About 30 detectives are taking part this time around.
