LANSING, Mich. — Registered nurses at McLaren Health Care locations in Lansing plan to picket Wednesday evening as they near nine months without a contract.

Nurses at McLaren Hospital and McLaren Orthopedic have been without a contract since September 2018 as their union, the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local 459, continues to negotiate.

"We are looking for improvements in our staffing ratios which determines how many patients a nurse can be assigned," said registered nurse Julie Murray, the union's chief steward. "We want the public to know the nurses want to be able to safely care for our patients as well as being fairly compensated for doing so."

Murray claims that McLaren is only offering concessions during contract negotiations in spite of building a new hospital worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Picketers will be at McLaren Hospital, 401 W. Greenlawn, and McLaren Orthopedic, 2727 S. Pennsylvania, starting at 6 p.m.
