EAST LANSING, Mich. — Many travelers have considered short-term rental options, such as Airbnb when it comes to traveling.
But have you ever asked the question, "How are these properties regulated?"
Michigan lawmakers are working on new legislation that would ban communities from prohibiting those kinds of rentals.
The City of East Lansing is not fully on board with this idea.
Currently, East Lansing does not entirely stop anyone from using their house, apartment or condominium as a short-term rental property,
The city says it has no problem with short-term rentals, such as Airbnb.
City officials say their concern lies with the language of the bill.
East Lansing says it completely takes away their right to regulate and that would mean that there is no way to ensure the safety of those that want to rent in the area.
According Airbnb, in 2018, the company's so-called "hosts" in Ingham County earned $1.2 million through 11,300 short-term rentals.
