It's been more than a year since a Jackson County sheriff was heard making derogatory comments about minorities and women on audio recordings released as part of a lawsuit filed against him.
Sheriff Steven Rand has admitted and apologized for those comments but has refused calls from several groups to resign.
In Michigan, sheriffs can only be removed by recall or by a governor's order.
Now, Jackson Mayor Derek Dobies and Vice Mayor Arlene Robinson say they're planning to write letters to Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel to ask for Sheriff Rand's removal.
The Jackson County Board of Commissioners asked former Governor Rick Snyder to remove Rand a year ago.
Snyder's office then forwarded the letter to then Attorney General Bill Schuette to review it, but nothing was done before they left office last December.
Sheriff Rand has been working as the Jackson County sheriff without benefits for nearly a year.
Last May, the County Board of Commissioners voted to unanimously strip them away after he refused to resign.
A representative from Governor Whitmer's office told Jackson County officials they're looking into the issue.
Earlier this month, we told you an attempt to recall the Jackson County sheriff had fallen short.
The man leading the recall effort didn't get enough signatures in the 60 days to get the issue on the ballot.
Dean Schuette is the father of the sheriff's lieutenant suing Sheriff Rand in federal court.
Schuette says he plans to collect more signatures for the recall petition once it warms up.
