Michigan State Police received about 50 separate citizen complaints over Director Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue's decision to share a Facebook post that called NFL players who kneel during the national anthem "anti-American degenerates."
The phone calls and emails were disclosed Wednesday in an internal affairs report released in response to a public records request by The Associated Press.
An investigator's interview of Etue was kept confidential because it was an involuntary statement. Etue could have consented to release it but exercised her right not to.
The agency also didn't disclose the investigator's recommended charges, calling them preliminary.
The final arbiter in this case was Gov. Rick Snyder, who refused calls to fire Etue. He recently announced she would lose five days of pay for the "inappropriate" use of social media.
