OWOSSO, Mich. — Michigan has the highest automobile insurance rates in the country, but a House Committee is working to lower those costs.
There are nine state lawmakers, including Representative Ben Frederick (R-Owosso), who have joined the House’s Committee to reduce auto rates. The committee is made up of both Democrats and Republicans.
Their focus is taking a look at Michigan’s No-Fault insurance system and the committee will then compare it to other states that have the no-fault system.
Lawmakers say they’ll bring in people who have benefited from the system and then look for ways on how to reform it. From there they will come up with a list of recommendations.
There is no timeline as to when the committee will begin meeting but Rep. Frederick says he would like to see measurable proposals out by the end of 2019.
A Bill aimed at lowering auto insurance rates in Michigan was introduced last week in the State Senate. It is still in its early stages and is being reviewed by a Senate Committee.
