Starting Friday, Verizon Wireless will be turning on its 5G Ultra Wideband network in Grand Rapids.

This is the second city in Michigan, behind Detroit, to have the new technology.

While typical speeds are 400mbps bursting to 1gbps, locally Verizon is seeing speeds approaching 2gbps. That means full movie downloads in less than 10 seconds.

In Grand Rapids, 5G Ultra Wideband service will be available in parts of Downtown, East Grand Rapids, Allendale, Kentwood, Wyoming and near landmarks, such as Grand Valley State University, Gerald Ford Presidential Museum, Woodland Mall, Shops at Centerpoint and Rogers Plaza.

“The Michigan Chamber congratulates Verizon on their 5G expansion in Michigan,” said Michigan Chamber President and CEO Rich Studley. “This investment will help businesses in West Michigan stay on the cutting edge of communication, increase efficiency and better serve their customers.”
