Flags will be lowered to half-staff Thursday, May 16 to honor a fallen soldier.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the State Capitol Complex and on all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff to honor the service of Army Pfc. Michael "Mikey" Thomason and coincide with his military funeral.
The 28-year-old from Lincoln Park was killed in an non-combat incident in northern Syria on Sunday, April 28.
Pfc. Thomason was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
During his service, Pfc. Thomason was awarded two Army Commendation Medals, including one with a "C" device for combat, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, Operation Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Overseas Service Ribbon.
Pfc. Thomason's funeral will be at the Martenson Family of Funeral Homes, located at 10915 Allen Rd. in Allen Park.
The service will start at 11 a.m. in the funeral home and will proceed to Woodmere Cemetery, located at 9400 W. Fort St. in Detroit where he will be laid to rest.
