Best practices to avoid the flu

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan is one of the 47 states where the flu is currently widespread. There have been two pediatric deaths reported in the state in 2019.

Doctors say it’s not too late to get a flu shot, as this year’s season is peaking. They say there’s something even more pressing you should do to avoid the flu.

Doctors recommend giving your house a good cleaning and staying away from people you think may be sick.

According to healthcare professionals, the influenza virus can get on all types of surfaces and depending on where it is, the virus can stick around, which may be especially concerning for families who have children.

Cleaning experts recommend having simple items in your household during the flu season.

“Some of the simplest things that you can do is keeping antibacterial and virus wipes all over your house,” said Elizabeth Cannon, owner of ‘Two Maids & A Mop.’

It’s recommended you use those wipes to clean things at home that people touch often, like door handles, keyboards, phones and remotes.

Chair handles need a good wipe down, because when someone sneezes, they usually put their hands back on the chairs.

You should also consider using paper instead of cloth towels, because doctors say one of the most susceptible places to germs in your home are hand towels.

Health officials say making sure to wash your hands frequently during peak flu season is one of the best ways to keep from getting sick. They recommend the best way to avoid the flu is to get vaccinated.
