Kwame Kilpatrick’s recent prison transfer was prompted by a request to be closer to his children, said Bernard Kilpatrick.
The former mayor’s father spoke to the 7 Investigators by phone Wednesday. The elder Kilpatrick said his son asked to move from the El Reno Federal Correctional facility to a prison facility on the east coast so he could be closer to his three sons.

Bernard Kilpatrick said he Kilpatrick twins, Jelani and Jalil are attending colleges in Florida and Indiana.

The youngest son of the ex-Detroit mayor, Jonas, is living in Washington D.C., according to his grandfather.

Kwame is serving a 28-year prison sentence for his conviction on racketeering, bribery and other charges.  On Monday, Kilpatrick was moved from Oklahoma to a detention center in Philadelphia. On Tuesday he was moved to FCI Fort Dix, a minimum security facility in New Jersey.

Despite some speculation that Kilpatrick could be pardoned, Bernard Kilpatrick said he had only heard rumors and that he had heard nothing directly about that possibility.
