Award-winning actor, author and entrepreneur Hill Harper will now be calling Detroit his home and place of work.
Harper has bought downtown Detroit’s Roasting Plant Coffee on Woodward Ave., inside the First National Building.
"Having lived here filming two movies in Detroit over the past four years, I have come to love this city and its people. I believe in Detroit. It is truly a vibrant, unique and great American city,” said Harper, whose known for his roles in “CSI:NY” and Showtime’s “Homeland.”
He’s also bought a home in a historic neighborhood in Detroit and said he plans on being "hands-on" in the business, with training and connecting with local charities.
The actor said he plans to use the coffee roaster and café as a platform for his Manifest Your Destiny Foundation that helps underserved youth. Harper wants to use the Roasting Plant to provide tactical work skills and professional growth opportunities for young people in Detroit.
“It is truly an honor and privilege for me to help fuel the Motor City, not just with Roasting Plant’s incomparable coffee—but by providing career paths and launching pads to greater success in a booming industry for young Detroiters hungry for opportunity and active mentorship,” said Harper.
In addition to the Detroit location, there are three other Roasting Plant Coffee locations in New York and Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport.
Harper, originally from Iowa, is an honors graduate of both Brown University and Harvard University.
He’ll be playing a journalist in the upcoming Tupac Shakur biopic “All Eyez on Me” and is the host of the CNN series “How It Really Happened with Hill Harper.”
