EAST LANSING, Mich. — Kristen Choi, a Haslett High grad, has been named to the Forbes ‘30 Under 30’ list for health care.
She was named to the Forbes’ list for her work as a psychiatric nurse and assistant professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.
“Forbes has historically recognized mostly entrepreneurial kinds of leaders in healthcare. And has had less focus on clinicians who are doing the front line work,” Choi explained.
Her research focuses on the coronavirus’ impact on patients’ mental health.
For Choi’s mother, this work is a perfect example of her daughter’s compassion for others.
“I know that she really has like compassion on the individual person, but also, I've seen her really want to go beyond that and work with policy and making change pen big term and the long, long range,” Lori Choi said.
Kristen Choi says the Haslett community made her who she is today.
“I think that a lot of what I learned from the kind of upbringing I had in Michigan still stays with me and I think it's really what led me to want to become a nurse and to have a passion for really helping people with mental illness,” she said.
Choi now lives and works in Los Angeles but she keeps the most important pieces of Haslett with her.
“I’m very grateful to have come from the community where there was an emphasis on relationships … I hope that the work I’m doing can help make our healthcare systems more relational and more human centered in the way that people need,” Choi said.
