Saint Johns Brewing Co. opened about a month ago in the heart of downtown Saint Johns, occupying a 130-year-old building that was once a bank.

"This has got the small town feel," said General Manager Joe Herman. "People can walk home and they don't have to drive down to Lansing or 20 or 30 minutes away to get to the other breweries. They've got something right here."

And they've embraced the building's history.

"Getting in here you have the vault doors and the different aspects we brought in and kept from the bank," Herman said.

The vaults now stand as coolers used to house kegs of beer and food. Night deposit boxes can still be found on the outside of the building.

The opening of the brewery was delayed for months due to COVID, and the dining room still sits empty because of restrictions on indoor dining imposed by the state.

But Herman says the support of the community ordering take out orders has made opening during a pandemic a little easier.

"St. Johns is a really great community," he said. "Local business owners and just the patrons, alike, they just get you excited for putting back in the community."

Corrine Fisher has been ordering take out from the brewery.

"I look forward to coming in and being able to sit down when we're allowed for a beverage and some good food," Fisher said.

For now, St. Johns Brewing Co. is doing take-out orders for beer and food. The full menu can be found at www.stjohnsbrew.com.
