An MSU student is leading a petition drive to get the University to reopen a space that first opened in the 1920s.

The women-only lounge in the MSU Union is being turned into a co-ed study space. That has a lot of people on campus upset.

Wednesday they staged a sit-in and asked people to sign a petition demanding the University reverse it's decision.

The student who organized Wednesday's protest hopes to send the message that the women-only lounge is a valuable space to students.

"It's used by Muslim women so they can remove their hijabs. It's used by sexual assault survivors so they can distance themselves from their attacker," said Alyse Maksimoski, an MSU student. "It's used by a vast majority on the campus as a safe space from predation and harassment."

The petition also calls for MSU to reopen it's Women's Resource Center which was dissolved over the summer.
