HOLT, Michigan — The attorney general's office said in some areas, you have to have a permit to host a garage sale, but the big takeaway is that you're not allowed to sell any items that have been recalled.

There are a few things you can do to make sure what you're selling  — and buying — is safe.

"This is my mother's yard sale here and she's got a lot of stuff from around the house, I mean we did a little research on her stuff just to sell it as cheap as we can to get rid of it," Susan Worden said.

However, it takes much more research. The attorney general's office said the seller might not always know an item has been recalled, so it's up to you to make sure that you know what you're buying.

"It's really important to just do a little bit of research, prepare, and just make sure the items that you are buying are safe for you and your family," said Megan Hawthorne with the attorney general's office.
