Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope has determined the petition aimed at repealing the city's medical marijuana ordinance does not have enough valid signatures. That means the ordinance is officially in effect. The city will start taking license applications for safety compliance, processor facility, secure transporter and grower facility on Tuesday, October 24. The date to start taking applications for a provisioning center license won't be set until the city settles on a scoring criteria.

The Clerk gave the following reasons for the rejected signatures:

- signers were not registered to vote in Lansing
- signers gave addresses that are not in Lansing
- voters signed the petitions more than once
- out-of-state petition circulators did not complete their certificates properly

The petition could have forced the City Council to either repeal the ordinance or put it on the ballot for a referendum. The circulators have 10 more days to get enough valid signatures. Stay with News 10 and wilx.com for updates on their progress.
