Caregiver arrested for abuse of infant in Ionia

A caregiver who was watching an infant has been arrested for child abuse, says the Ionia Department of Public Safety.

On Thursday, Ionia DPS responded to a medical call at 6:34 p.m. on N Jackson Street. Officers found an infant who had fallen, according to the caregiver. Officers were told the infant hit its head, according to the department.

The child was taken to Sparrow-Ionia Hospital by Life EMS. Hospital staff concluded that the infant had serious injuries, and the infant was transported to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Through a criminal investigation, information was obtained on the cause of the injuries and police were able to obtain a warrant.

The caregiver was arrested and lodged at the Ionia County Jail on one count of Child Abuse, 1st Degree on Monday. The charge carries a maximum of life in prison.
