People who drink fruit juices and pop, even diet pop, could be at risk for poor memory, smaller brains and a higher risk of stroke or dementia.
Researchers from Boston University tested the relationship between beverage intake and brain volume and memory.
They found that people who consumed sugary sodas and fruit juices had greater evidence of accelerated brain aging, including smaller brain volumes and poorer memory function.
Experts also found that people who consumed diet soda on a daily basis were close to three times as likely to develop stroke and dementia.
Researchers say although their findings do not prove cause and effect, people should still be cautious about consuming diet sodas in excess.
