Sparrow Hospital has received a national quality improvement award for its work on a project to reduce health disparities in the mid-Michigan region.
Sparrow was recognized for successfully completing a national initiative on health disparities sponsored by the Alliance of Independent Academic Medical Centers (AIAMC), based in Chicago. Accepting the award for Sparrow were Ted Glynn, M.D., Vice President of Medical Education and Research, and Lisa Powell, MBA, Graduate Medical Education Specialist.
The AIAMC national initiative is the only national collaborative of its kind in which Resident Physicians lead multidisciplinary teams in quality improvement projects aligned to their hospital’s goals. Besides Sparrow, 28 other hospitals and health systems nationwide participated in the most recent initiative.
Sparrow was selected to participate based on its commitment to better understanding and reducing health disparities in the region. The Sparrow project focuses on providing training on how to develop an advanced care plan with Patients who have chronic disease or terminal illness, to assure that the manner in which we deliver care aligns to their beliefs and values.
Since fall 2015, Sparrow leaders have attended on-site learning sessions and regular teleconferences and webinars to explore the issue.
“Sparrow represents the best of forward-thinking academic medical centers that proactively address community health needs while at the same time reform residency training by involving trainees directly in community-based initiatives,” said Kimberly Pierce-Boggs, AIAMC Executive Director.
Sparrow is a not-for-profit organization affiliated with Michigan State University’s three human health colleges. This project is in line with our mission is to improve the health of the people in our communities by providing quality, compassionate care to everyone, every time.
As a teaching hospital, Sparrow has continued to strengthen its affiliation with MSU by forming a joint initiative, the Center for Innovation and Research, which supports fellowships and recruits researchers to develop, test, implement and evaluate innovative approaches in healthcare.
The AIAMC includes more than 80 academic hospitals and health systems who regard medical education and research as key assets in providing Patient-centered care.
