LANSING, Mich. — Imagine being able to call a doctor’s office, get scheduled for an appointment within one week, and have two experts looking over your family’s health information.
It’s possible at the McLaren Family Medicine Residency Clinic, where resident doctors hone their skills after finishing medical school under the supervision of seasoned physicians with decades of experience as they help patients of all ages.
“Patients get two doctors looking over their charts, with new, fresh doctors giving exceptionally attentive care under the guidance of attending physicians,” said R. Taylor Scott, DO, associate program director for the McLaren Family Medicine Residency Clinic. “Our team provides excellent and expert care, and we’re proud of the access we can provide to the community.”
The McLaren Family Medicine Residency Clinic gives talented new doctors a setting to see a wide variety of patients, while offering unrivaled access to care for those looking to see a physician quickly.
Many patients can be seen for a first appointment within one week of calling, in some cases being scheduled as soon as the very next day. “You receive quality care from people who are on the cutting-edge of the newest medical advancements, and you can get in right away,” said Mark Garcia, DO, clinical faculty at the McLaren Family Medicine Residency Clinic.
Dr. Garcia has firsthand experience with the Family Medicine Residency Clinic, not only as faculty but as a resident himself. “I learned so much at the Family Medicine Residency Clinic,” said Dr. Garcia. “A resident sees lots of different patients and some very rare cases that they might not see in a normal office environment. The complexity meant a lot of experience that made me very confident treating patients.”
Physicians at the Family Medicine Residency Clinic have a wide range of experience thanks in part to their ability to care for an entire family. “We take care of all ages,” said McLaren Greater Lansing Family Medicine Clinic Program Director Amy Keenum, DO. “We see everyone from babies to elders, and we like to take care of the whole family if possible. We offer a wide array of primary care, including procedures like skin biopsies, sports physicals, pap smears, flu shots, and child vaccines.”
McLaren Greater Lansing’s mission is to be the best value in health care, as defined by quality outcomes and cost. That mission is key at the Family Medicine Residency Clinic, as it accepts patients with private insurance and Medicaid. “The Family Medicine Residency Clinic is focused on cost-conscious care and has a staff that is truly engaged in providing the best quality for our patients,” said Brenda McCaige, McLaren Greater Lansing practice manager.
Resident physicians spend three years at McLaren Greater Lansing’s Family Medicine Residency Clinic, so there are always new and eager doctors ready to help patients address their health needs. Some doctors continue to see patients they first helped during their residency long after they have finished their learning at the clinic. “Sometimes you see somebody who is very sick your first year, and by the time you’ve finished your time as a resident they are happy and healthy,” said Dr. Garcia. “It’s one of the most satisfying experiences you can have as a doctor.”
The McLaren Family Medicine Residency Clinic is located on the second floor of McLaren Orthopedic Hospital at 2727 S. Pennsylvania Avenue in Lansing.
