DeWitt family making pillows for sick children

Never doubt the power of a pillow.

"Pillows seem like such a, I mean in some ways insignificant, a small pillow," says Chad Borodychuk. "They're huge."

You'll find hundreds of them, along with stacks of fabric and stuffing in the basement of the Borodychuk's home in DeWitt.

The family is on a mission to help sick children.

Lisa and Chad know the pain that comes with having a child in and out of the hospital.

Their seven-year-old daughter Olivia has an incurable illness, a rare form of Leukodystrophy called Alexander Disease.

"[She] has never had the opportunity to walk, has never had the opportunity to talk," says Olivia's mom Lisa.

Over time, Olivia has come to rely on special pillows made by her mother to keep her comfortable.

Nurses and patients loved it when the mom started making the colorful pillows for other kids at Sparrow Hospital, so in 2014, the Olivia Kay Foundation was born.

Now a non-profit, the foundation supplies pillows not only to Sparrow Hospital, but to Helen Devos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids and more.

The mission is simple: keep kids like Olivia comfortable.

"It's an opportunity to kind of know that this is something that's bringing comfort, and it is also bringing relief," says dad.

For Lisa and Chad, the journey won't be easy. But, their home is full, with the energy of little brother Oliver, the footsteps of the family dog, and often, the sound of a sewing machine - all for Olivia.
