Funds that Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital received as a recipient of the 2016 Ludwig Community Benefit Award will be used to provide free healthy cooking classes to participants of local community health programming.

In June, the Michigan Health & Hospital Association recognized HGB for opening AL!VE, its experience-based, destination health park with the goal of improving community health and vitality. As part of the award, the hospital received $3,000 to assist its efforts. HGB coordinated with its community partners, the Barry-Eaton District Health Department and Cherry Health, and will use the award funds to offer free healthy cooking classes to their program participants.

“Cherry Health is excited to partner with AL!VE to help our clients achieve and maintain their health goals,” said Kelly Csom, RDN, Cherry Health dietitian.

Classes are valued at $20 and will be taught in RELISH, AL!VE’s teaching demonstration kitchen. The 150 vouchers will be split between the two organizations. Examples of healthy cooking classes include “Healthy Crockpot Meals” to assist with meal planning and “Power of the Plate,” which demonstrates how food choices can combat high blood pressure.

“We are thrilled at this opportunity to further expand our reach and benefit in the community,” said Patrick Sustrich, HGB vice president of health and wellness and AL!VE executive director. “Each organization will distribute the vouchers to those who can most benefit from these nutrition classes.”
