Ingham County dealing with increase in Hepatitis A cases

Ingham County dealing with increase in Hepatitis A cases
Posted

The Ingham County Health Department has vaccinated staff and clients at two homeless shelters against Hepatitis A because of an increase in the number of cases.

Three people in Ingham County have been diagnosed with the disease since August. One of them died.

While that may not seem like a lot of cases it's as many as the county typically sees in a year according to Ingham County Health Officer Linda Vail.

Hepatitis A can be spread through sexual contact or by eating or drinking contaminated food or water. The disease affects the liver.

Symptoms include fatigue, abdominal pain, yellow skin, dark urine and pale feces. Symptoms usually start between 2 and 6 weeks after infection. They can last for several months.

Anyone who has them should see a doctor immediately.
