Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce Carolyn Drown and Rachel Harvitt as its Generosity Guild Volunteers of the Year. They were recognized at the hospital’s annual Generosity Guild Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon Friday, May 11.

HGB employees and Generosity Guild volunteers nominated 17 volunteers for the annual recognition. All Generosity Guild volunteers voted on the nominees to determine final winners.

Carolyn Drown was recognized as the first of this year’s Volunteers of the Year. She was one of only eight who worked more than 450 volunteer hours. Carolyn was honored by her fellow volunteers and HGB staff for her positivity, friendliness, patience when facing challenges, understanding of others, willingness to try new things, respectfulness toward all, and her kindness.

Rachel Harvitt was recognized as the second of this year’s Volunteers of the Year. She serves as the president of the nonprofit Auxiliary, which operates The Gift Basket, as well as multiple fund-raising events throughout the year. Rachel was recognized by her fellow volunteers and HGB staff for her confidence and organization as a leader, and her professionalism, respect for others, willingness to work hard, creative ideas, generosity throughout the community, excellent planning, and her care for everyone she works with and assists.

HGB has 120 active volunteers who donated 17,039 hours of their time in 2017. There are many different types of hospital volunteers, including those who greet and assist patients and families, and help with clinical and office tasks within each department. Volunteers also help coordinate several events and fund-raisers throughout the year that raise money for the hospital, as well as operate The Gift Basket, the HGB gift shop.

“The volunteers provide so much more than just time to HGB. Their constant smiles, fantastic attitude, and incredible ability to make everyone feel welcome and cared for help make our events and atmosphere so special,” said Barbara Fulton, director of community development. “Our sincerest congratulations to Carolyn and Rachel, in addition to all our volunteers; we owe a large part of our success to everyone who generously gives of their time and talent."

The hospital is always recruiting new volunteers to support its efforts in caring for patients, families and the community. If you are interested in learning more about HGB volunteer opportunities, contact Mary Hogan in Community Development at 517-543-1050, ext. 52409 or email
