Aromatherapy is increasing in popularity with many people using essential oils as alternative treatments for health issues. 

While you need to be careful with some of the questionable claims surrounding essential oils, scientific research has shown six oils can help relieve joint pain.

There are:

  • Lemongrass
  • Bergamot
  • Geranium
  • Ginger
  • Cinnamon
  • Lavender

With joint pain, it’s not the smell that helps, it’s the plant chemicals. 

Aromatherapy uses concentrated extracts from the stems, petals, leaves and other parts of the plant.

The extracts are referred to as essential oils and they can promote healing when breathed in or absorbed through the skin. Your perception of pain can be changed when the plant’s chemicals reach a network of nerves in your brain.

  1. Most essential oils are considered safe.  But if you’re pregnant, have severe asthma or a history of allergies, please talk to your doctor first.  
  2. Essential oils are made from plants so beware of allergic reactions.  Always do a small patch test first. 
  3. Side effects can happen.  Watch for headaches, skin rash, wheezing, inflammation and irritation.
  4. Follow instructions carefully for each individual oil.  Always dilute essential oils before using on your skin. 

Aromatherapy should not replace standard medical treatment for joint pain. 

It’s a great supplement to use alongside other joint pain therapies - relief can be felt within 30 minutes and may last hours.
