Weekend food boxes created for area students

Posted

Some local kids will have the food they need to get through the weekends this school year, thanks to some area rotary clubs. They teamed up with volunteers from Lansing's Board of Water and Light to put together Weekend Survival Kits.

The kits contain two weekends worth of food. They are distributed through schools to students in need.

Local rotary clubs each contributed $3,000 and got a matching $7,500 grant to put more than $16,000 toward the effort. With that money, they'll be able to make $4,000 food kits for the upcoming school year.

Volunteers packed 1,000 kits on Thursday. They will be distributed to schools in the coming week.

The program helps about 2,500 kids at 55 local schools.
