LANSING, Mich. — Tragedy, personified: telling the story of John Merrick, director Amy Rickett explores the capacity of human acceptance in a Lansing production of London’s classic The Elephant Man. Riverwalk standout Jeff Magnuson leads a cast of Lansing theater veterans through the story of real life Joseph Merrick: a disfigured man who, through the kindness of celebrated surgeon Frederick Treves, rises from freak show attraction to upper-class intellectual in Victorian era London.

Often praised for its ability to hold a mirror to society’s inhumane treatment of its own members, the play has attracted actors such as Mark Hamill, David Bowie and most recently Bradley Cooper to perform the titular role of The Elephant Man. Having won the Tony Award in 1979 for Best Play its timeless themes of acceptance and humanity make it as relevant now as when Merrick was alive.

The Elephant Man runs our standard two weekends Thursday-Sunday starting March 14th. Tickets are $15 and $12. Both Thursday performances begin at 7 pm and are the discounted price for Bargain Thursdays. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 pm and our Sunday matinees begin at 2 pm.
