The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Michigan District Office and its resource partners are supporting the ninth annual Small Business Saturday on November 24, and reinforcing the importance of shopping local this holiday season. Celebrated each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday focuses on the tremendous impact shopping small can make in local communities.
“Each year, the SBA encourages independent businesses to leverage Small Business Saturday to help drive more traffic to their businesses – whether it’s through their doors or e-commerce during the holiday shopping season,” said Constance Logan, SBA Michigan district director. “We also encourage shoppers to shop small first, as that support can make a significant impact in their communities.”
This year SBA’s Michigan District and the partners it powers are visiting 24 different types of small businesses in 16 cities and towns across the state that have started and grown with SBA assistance. From Escanaba in the Upper Peninsula to small towns such as Charlotte and Claire, and urban areas of Detroit and Ann Arbor, they are highlighting how small businesses are the engine of the national economy. Small businesses create two out of three jobs and about half of all American workers are either employed by a small business or own a small business.
“This year the SBA Michigan team will be shopping at several of Michigan’s more than 870,000 small businesses on Small Business Saturday, celebrating all the entrepreneurial efforts to start, grow and expand in the state,” said Logan.
Last year, an estimated 108 million nationwide consumers shopped small on Small Business Saturday. The movement is set to build on last year’s success and rally even more communities to come together in support of all small businesses.
