"Rent": Rock musical comes to Riverwalk

Posted

In celebration of the 20th anniversary, Riverwalk Theatre presents the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning rock musical – RENT, the story of a group of impoverished young artists struggling to survive and create a life in New York City's East Village in the tumultuous days of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Destitution, drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, social tension, and political unrest challenge this group physically and emotionally. Facing the problems head on, they make personal self-discoveries and find what really matters most in life. With music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson, RENT is loosely based on Puccini’s opera La Boheme.

Director and choreographer Kelly Stuible-Clark and music director Nicole Martin have assembled a large cast of both veteran and new stage performers, which includes: Trevor Early, Ben Cassidy, Jake McAskill, Travis Williams, Alexsandria Clift, Brennan Hattaway, Sally Hecksel, Carly Jacobs, Stephanie Banghart, Katy Ramos, Kellie Rowe, Andrea Grey, Lauren Romzek, Trevor McMinn, Ben English, Emilio Pido, Sidney Sauseda, Ty Schalter and D.J. Shafer.

During the run, Riverwalk Theatre will be working with the Lansing Area Aids Network (LAAN) to raise awareness of the progress that has been made in the lives of people who are HIV positive in the 20 years since RENT first opened on Broadway. There will also be a special performance on Wednesday, June 8, to support LAAN, a talk-back with the cast and people living with HIV and a HIV testing day are planned.
