The push to revitalize downtown Charlotte is took a step forward on Monday. People took turns taking a sledge hammer to a blighted building called "The Piece."
The 1800 era vacant building will soon be torn down to make way for a pocket park. It's all part of the Charlotte Rising campaign, which aims at creating a vibrant community.
Organizers say the new park will create a more welcoming downtown area.
The building was supposed to be torn down on Monday, but it was put off because of a potential asbestos issue.
Organizers say demolition should happen Wednesday or Thursday and they're hoping to start building this park next summer.
