Olivet College to Host Poetry Reading

OLIVET, Mich. — Olivet College will host Laura Apol and Dennis Hinrichsen for a poetry reading on Tuesday, March 17 at 7 p.m. in Klock Commons, inside Dole Hall, at Olivet College, 320 S. Main St., Olivet. There is no cost to attend.

Laura Apol is the author of four full-length collections: “Falling into Grace,” “Crossing the Ladder of Sun,” “Requiem, Rwanda,” and “Nothing but the Blood.” She is a two-time winner of the Oklahoma Book Award and a finalist for the Independent Publishers Award for poetry. Apol currently serves as the poet laureate of the Lansing area in mid-Michigan, and she is a faculty member at Michigan State University. Her most recent work, which centers around therapeutic writing and poetic inquiry, is titled “Poetry, Poetic Inquiry and Rwanda: Engaging with the Lives of Others,” and will be published by Springer International later this year.

Dennis Hinrichsen is the winner of 2020 Grid Poetry Prize for his collection “This Is Where I Live I Have Nowhere Else To Go.” His most recent works are “[q / lear],” a chapbook from Green Linden Press, and “Skin Music,” winner of the 2014 Michael Waters Poetry Prize from Southern Indiana Review Press. Hinrichsen’s work can be found in two anthologies from the Michigan State University Press: “Undocumented: Great Lakes Poets Laureate on Social Justice,” and “RESPECT: An Anthology of Poems on Detroit Music.” In addition, he served as the first poet laureate of the greater Lansing area from May 2017 to April 2019.
