OLIVET, Mich. — On May 24, Olivet College graduated its 17th Correction Officer Academy. Thirteen correctional officers and two pre-service participants completed the 160-hour training, including Kyle Staines of the Barry County Sheriff’s Department; Cody Lange and John Wiggs of the Berrien County Sheriff's Department; Robert Coady, Bryce Coburn, Sarah Knight, Dakota Schuemann and Dillon Swarthout of the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department; Victoria Patterson of the Cass County Sheriff's Department; Michael Newman and Kaylin Winchester of the Eaton County Sheriff's Department; Aaron Feldpaush and Julia Paulsen of the Ingham County Sheriff's Department; and Olivet College students Daitriona Bonds and Patrick Eldred.

“This is a great experience for individuals wanting to work as correctional officers, and it leads to many great job opportunities for participants,” said Regina Armstrong, Ph.D., Olivet College criminal justice program director and associate professor of criminal justice. “We have about a 95% job placement rate out of the program and we welcome any individual looking for a job in the correctional field to participate.”

The four-week academy offers a comprehensive, interactive instruction program in various disciplines for local correction officers. Training topics include custody and security, defensive tactics, first aid (including CPR and AED procedures), suicide awareness, fire safety

and interpersonal communications. The academy, certified by the Michigan Sheriff's Coordinating and Training Council, is an important element of providing the necessary skills for maintaining a safe, secure environment for correction officers, inmates and county residents.
