Local high school students are taking on a big fight. With community support, these young people are hoping to make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer's Disease.
The Jackson High School Boys and Girls Cross Country Team isn't just spending a lot of time training, the runners are taking on an even bigger challenge: tackling Alzheimer's Disease.
Coming up this weekend, the students will be hosting the "Purple Viking Run" to raise awareness and money.
The team will trade out their typical orange uniforms for purple jerseys, the color for Alzheimer's Awareness.
This year, the students decided they wanted to do something more than just run, so they started talking about ways to help community.
This close-knit group of runners realized a lot of people had parents and relatives effected by Alzheimer's Disease. So, they decided to raise awareness during their final home
"We're reaching out to the Alzheimer's Association and they will have a tent out...with pamphlets on how you can help yourself," says Senior Aidan Sova who is the team captain.
The team will have a donation jar set up alongside the the t-shirt and concessions.
"We are really looking to start a tradition that shines a light on something within the community," says Sova.
The team is inviting everyone to come to Ella Sharp Park to see the race this Saturday, October 15th at 1 p.m. They say with their purple jerseys, you won't be able to miss them.
